Life

My little boy got his first goose egg. He fell on his head and has a big bump on his forehead. I'm sure this is the first of many, and as soon as he got it, I think he forgot about it, because when I went to pick him up after work, he was smiling and playing away.

Came home to find a sick husband - cold, vomiting, etc. Made a quick soup, fed the family (even Patrick liked the broth!), and got everyone in bed.

Up early this morning for routine bloodwork. Couldn't find the veins in my arms, so they had to go through a vein in my hand. Ugh.

Is this how mundane life gets over time?

You've Heard Me Rant for 400 Posts... This One Is No Different

To celebrate my 400th post (yeah me!! 400 posts!), I thought I would write about something that has been in my life for as long as I can remember.

I guess I should start off by saying that I have been watching a new show on VH1, Viva Hollywood. Now, seriously, who wouldn't watch a reality show where the winner gets to star in a telenovela. A TELENOVELA! Just like the ones I grew up watching, full of rage, passion, vengence, and lust.

Now, just to save myself a little bit, I'll admit that I don't watch it when it's on. That is, I'm not rushing to the couch to tune in when it plays. But I do DVR it and watch it after the little boy is fast asleep.

At first, I wasn't sure how I would feel about the show and figured I would watch one episode and forget about it. But I have watched two episodes now, and I think I'm hooked.

Why am I hooked? Is it because Maria Conchita Alonso is on it? Is it because they call the house they live in "La Casa de Locos"? Is it because the deliciously attractive Carlos Ponce hosts it?

All good reasons, yes. But the truth is, it's because every week, Walter Mercado introduces one of the sins of the telenovela. Yes, THAT Walter Mercado. And I grew up watching him not even knowing what he was talking about (for those of you who don't know, he is a Latino astrologer, followed faithfully by many Latinos).

I remember being about seven years old, sick with some kind of cold or flu. I must have been carrying on about not wanting to take my medicine. And my mom said to me, "Walter is on the television." Immediately, I replied with, "What does he say about Pisces?" To which she replied, "He says all Pisces should take their medicine so they can get better."

And, of course, I did. Because Walter said to.

For those of you who need a refresher, enjoy!

And please, don't forget to take with you... Mucho, mucho, mucho... amor.

My Innocent Youth (soon to be revisited!)

As I was approaching my teen years, I fell in love with New Kids on the Block and absolutley loved Jordan Knight. I loved him so much that I bought a Stylistics record - yes, record - so I could listen to it (as an aside, I should thank Jordan Knight for an interview he did saying he was inspired by them, it completely opened my ears to fantastic music that I still listen to today) because if Jordan loved it, so did I.

Over the last few weeks, rumors have been flying around about a possible New Kids reunion. Thankfully, the rumors are true. They will be performing next month in my neck of the woods.

I never got to see them in the late 80's, when I was a big fan. Instead, I played their records, watched their videos and paid attention to the issues of Teen Beat (or whatever teen magazine would feature them). Unfortunately, I don't have any mementos of them from those years, but I still remember all their songs and moves.

I am certain there are a million other girls who are frantic that the boys will be on tour. I am sure they are ready to jump them, scream, cry, dance, and sing.

I think this dorky geeky girl may very well be joining them. :)

I'm an April Fool

I was checking my email earlier today and saw that gmail had a new feature. Whoa, I thought, that's amazing.

Then I saw the date on the calendar.

I was duped again. :)

Up Too Late Last Night

Yesterday I read Marta's post on Six Degrees of Separation.

Of course, I had to participate.

And then, when Mike got home from work, we played as we drifted off into sleep.

Mike: Okay, link Julie Andrews to Salma Hayek.

Me: Hmmmmm, okay, I got it! Julie Andrews was in Shrek the Third with Rupert Everett who was in My Best Friend's Wedding with Julia Roberts who was in Ocean's 11 with George Clooney who was in From Dusk till Dawn with Salma Hayek.

Mike: Alright. You're good. Please, go to sleep. It's past 1 am.

Me: Fine. But tomorrow, we play again!

Oh Marta, you have created a monster. :)

P.S. We tried one last one before we (finally!) called it a night. I know we got it, but I can't remember it right now - give it a try: Jonathan Silverman to Patrick Stewart.

Beast of Burden

I hear this song playing on the radio. It makes me want to get up and start dancing. Not the kind of dancing that you would do in a club. A kind of dancing that you do when you are home alone, dusting the house. Or a kind of dancing that you might do in your underpants when you think no one is looking. Something like that.

I went to see the doctor today for a 19 week visit. Once again, things look really good. I heard FeeNo's heartbeat again - it was in the 140s. Very good.

And I have gained another 4 pounds. So... that's 12 pounds lost, then 2 gained, and now, another 4 gained. I should be happy, since that's an actual loss of 6 pounds overall, but then the doctor mentioned my belly. Or should I say: my bellies.

(As an aside, when my best friend, acb, was pregnant, she referred to her bellies. She called them 'mama belly' and 'baby belly.' )

The best part is when he said that FeeNo is pushing my fat upwards. That's why my upper belly (mama belly) is so flabby and my lower belly (baby belly) is so tight.

That's all I needed to hear to be convinced that I am very sexy. A sexy beast.

I'm going home, finding the Rolling Stones CD and popping it in to dance tonight.

Poor Mike: he has his very own Beast of Burden on his hands.

Mid-Day Radio Rocks!

I was running an errand at lunchtime and heard a song that reminded me of my "yoof".

Enjoy the video!

On Being the Worst Mother in the World

Today, I had an appointment with the doc. I am doing well: no weight gain, even though I am already in my second trimester, my blood pressure is great, and my blood sugars are excellent. The doc was pleased and at this point, asked me to rest as often as possible and continue taking care of myself as I have been.

FeeNo is also looking pretty good: another strong heartbeat and progressing as should be expected.

The child is already showing signs of being difficult - first, FeeNo didn't want to move. He didn't want to face us. He was laying there, all curled up, with his legs in the air (yes, we got to see the legs, but they were crossed - we either have a very demure girl or an extremely shy boy in there).

When FeeNo finally started moving, he kept turning his back on us, never allowing for a good picture.

I hope this difficult stage only lasts while in utero, because I am sure that FeeNo is going to be facing all kinds of paparazzi upon arrival. Not only does FeeNo have grandparents that are going to be all over him, he also has aunts, uncles, and countless friends who are going to be snapping picture after picture. This kid better get used to the attention.

I finally scanned and posted all pictures of my ultrasounds. Unfortunately, I can't figure any of them out. I can't see a single image (except for the third picture), so I have to go based on what the ultrasound tech and Mike say.

March 13 - first pic. At this point, FeeNo is just a blob.

April 10 - second pic. Today, we heard the heartbeat, nice and strong. The kid wouldn't hold still for the picture. He kept twisting and turning.

April 25 - third pic. This is a picture of FeeNo's face. You can make out where his eyes, nose and mouth are (on the right hand side). It's definitely a face only a mother could love - and it totally freaks me out!

April 25 - third pic. According to the tech and Mike, this is FeeNo's profile. I can't see a darn thing. I am told he is facing toward the upper left of the pic and that you can see the profile of his face. Tell me, people, can you see that?

And, please, tell me: am I the worst mother in the world for not knowing what I am looking at in the picture?

Aloha, Don Ho

Mike, posing with Don Ho (who I thought looked like Yoko Ono but with more personality), in Hawaii, July 2005

"Tiny bubbles
in the wine
make me happy
make me feel fine."

Ah, memories of Hawaii. But also, memories of meeting Don Ho while on my honeymoon in July 2005. It was a complete fluke to see him in Oahu, on our last night on the island. We thought it would be silly, something to remember Hawaii by.

The show was typical dinner theater. Terrible food. Two drink minimum. Many old timers. But we were on our honeymoon - nothing could upset us. Well, except that we had to leave the next day.

Don appeared on stage, playing a keyboard, singing old Hawaii songs, making silly jokes, and showing tourists what good old Hawaiian hospitality was like.

At the end of the show, he invited all servicemen, honeymooners, etc to come see him for a free cassette tape of his music. A cassette tape, he joked, because his fans didn't own CD players.

We met him briefly, and he sent us back to the mainland with a tape for us and another for the mother-in-law, who he was sure would love it. As cheesey and hokey as it was, we had a good time.

Rest in peace, Don. I hope you are enjoying those tiny bubbles in the big wine bottle in the sky.

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth

Okay, folks, I promised details. Here is a chronicle of the last few weeks:

Wednesday, February 21 – Period is due.

Friday, February 23 – Take pregnancy test. Negative. Fly to Miami for Heather’s wedding.

Wednesday, February 28 – Still no period. Decide to take another pregnancy test and have Mike read it. Conversation goes like this:

Me: Take a look at this. What do you see?
Mike: What am I supposed to see?
Me: I’m not telling you. Just tell me what you see.
Mike: It looks like a line. And then another light line next to it.
Me: A. Light.Line. Next. To.It?
Mike: Yes.
Me: Holy shit. I’m pregnant.

Mike begins to strut around the house and begins calling himself “Macho Man.” He begins to talk about his virility. The strutting and talking continue for days.

Thursday, March 1 – Have blood drawn to confirm pregnancy.

Saturday, March 3 - Call Miami and let the Abuelos know what's going on. Abuela is happy. Abuelo is beyond happy. Drive down to see Grandma. She dances an Irish jig.

Sunday, March 4 - Have a birthday dinner with Mike's side of the family. Am secretly jealous that I cannot partake in the Sake Bomber drinking escapade. But really not that jealous.

Monday, March 5 – Hear from my OB/GYN. She congratulates me on being pregnant and sends me to a perinatalogist to have me checked out. She also sends me for more bloodwork.

Wednesday, March 7 - Feeling paranoid because I don't feel any different. Take another pregnancy test. It becomes positive in about 3 seconds. Just to make sure the tests are functioning properly, I have Mike take one too. His result (thankfully): negative.

Thursday, March 8 - My birthday. I work all day. Then I go home and fall asleep at 8:30 p.m.

Friday, March 9 – Mike takes me to the Melting Pot to celebrate my birthday. On the drive there, I get nauseous and Mike threatens to take me home and celebrate another time. I refuse to go home because dammit - it's my birthday dinner. And it's damn delicious.

Monday, March 12 – Hear from my OB/GYN again. My bloodwork is back and my hcg and progesterone levels are even higher. I ask the nurse if I am ‘really knocked up.’ She laughs and confirms that I am.

Tuesday, March 13 - Visit the perinatalogist. My blood sugars* have been wonderful for the past few years. Not too much concern over that. But, my blood pressure is elevated. Am referred to a cardiologist (WTH?) for treatment. But, thankfully, I am cleared for treatment and sent back to my regular OB/GYN. Before I leave, they do an ultrasound and we see the blob that is FeeNo. We can see the heart beating! Holy smokes. Mike and I share a moment. We are having a baby! Baby is due November 1. It's all very cheesey.

Everyday - I'm tired. I'm sleepy. I can't keep my eyes open. I fall asleep during my favorite television shows. Did I mention I'm tired?

Saturday, March 24 - I stay indoors all day. I finally take a shower at 9 pm. I put on fresh pajamas.

Sunday, March 25 - I get morning sickness. It lasts all day long. Stay in pajamas all day again. Make Mike go out and buy me plantains. And a skirt steak. And white rice. I love that man.

Monday, March 26 - Mike cleans the entire house because I was 'resting' the entire weekend and didn't do a damn thing.

Friday, March 30 - Have a regular OB/GYN appointment. Everything is fine with FeeNo. On my way out of the doctor's office, I experience a hypoglycemic episode. My blood sugar drops too low, they have to call the paramedics. I am given glucose through a vein in my hand and 'revived' me. They sent me to the ER for observation. While there, my new doctor came down to see me - a perinatalogist. I am now back to being a 'high-risk pregnancy.' I asked him, "So, you are going to delivery my baby?" and he responded by saying, " I am going to deliver your healthy baby." That's all Mike and I needed to hear. The doc sent me home to rest. Told me to take it easy.

Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1 - Spent time at home, taking it easy. On Sunday night, Mike begins to explain the ins and outs of baseball statistics to my stomach. I fall asleep immediately.

Monday, April 2 - The Gators are playing for the National Championship for the second year in a row. I watch 5 minutes of the game before I fall asleep from exhaustion. When will this fatigue end?

Tuesday, April 3 - Wake up to the news that the Gators won AGAIN. The day is a good one. Except for the morning sickness. Ugh.

Friday, April 6 - The anticipation of telling everyone about the pregnancy is making me very anxious. I just want it to be Easter already!

Sunday, April 8 - We finally spill the beans to people. There is an excess of merriment and joy. Who knew that FeeNo would make everyone so thrilled?

More reports to come as the weeks and months pass, I promise.

* I have never written anything in my blog about my blood sugars and the type 1 diabetes I was diagnosed with when I was 18. It's never been an issue for me and over the years, I have learned to control it, live with it, and even embrace it as a part of my life. But I have never let it define who I am. There are many other things in my life that define me. However, having diabetes is going to play a significant part in the development of FeeNo and I will be writing more about it and how it affects my pregnancy. Please be patient with all the terminology and most importantly, send us good thoughts and prayers. They are greatly appreciated.

I Think Spring Has Sprung

Really, I do.

For the first time in many weeks, I am feeling pretty darn happy. I mean, I'm pretty much a happy person and have a pretty good disposition all-around, but today, things are different somehow.

Maybe it's the shining sun - especially after a rainstorm yesterday that lasted the entire day and flooded streets and such - that's helping with my mood.

Whatever it is, I hope it doesn't go away.

This weekend, we will be celebrating Easter at my mother-in-law's. The house is going to be filled with the entire family - in-laws, nephews, even my aunt and uncle. We hope it'll be a good day for everyone.

And to make it all better, I've been recruited to make cocktail weenies. Apparently, they are my specialty. Doesn't that say alot about me? I make terrific cocktail weenies.

Happy Easter everyone! May you enjoy the blessings of the holiday and of this beautiful Spring!

Back to back and Belly to Belly!

I know that's what John Sterling says when the Yankees double score, but it's very appropriate this morning.

Go Gators!

It's a good day, most definitely.

Unfortunately, I fell asleep after five minutes of the game. What can I say? I'm a loser.

The Draft

Has it already been a year since the last draft?

It's going to be a long season, folks. 162 games per team.

At least I don't have to pick the players this year.

It Just Keeps on Getting Better

I don't normally miss Miami.

But it's March. And that means one thing - one very important thing - is going on right now.

The Dade County Youth Fair.

How I miss the Fair.

The Concessions. Oh. My. God. Elephant ears, cotton candy, corn on the cob. I can close my eyes and remember it all now.

Yesterday, when I was on the phone with my mother, she mentioned the Fair.

I think I am going to have to plan a trip to Miami next year in March.

Leaving... on a jet plane

My long-awaited trip to Miami is finally here! And while I really don't like Miami, I am looking forward to getting out of the freezing temperatures and gusty winds.

As far as I'm concerned, the stress of traveling began last night. It was nearly midnight when we finished packing, something I blame on myself due to a long week at work. But anyhow, as I was saying, the stress began last night.

Me: Have you taken out all the things you need for the weekend?

Mike: Like what? I have jeans and t-shirts out already.

Me: How about your suit, a shirt, and a tie that doesn't make you look like the biggest Republican in the place? And your square-toed shoes and dress socks?

Mike: Oh yeah, a suit.

Me: I can't wait to see Little Owen. I'm so excited.

Mike: We're going to see Owen and family? I didn't know that.

Me: Duh? Didn't I mention that we were going to a wedding? The wedding of a former college roommate? A roommate that I had when I was a student at the University of Florida and was a bleeding orange and blue gator? A roommate that was also roommates with my bff?

Mike: Oh, I must have not been listening.

Ugh.

The stress continued when I mentioned that we would be bringing my parents presents. Two carry on suitcases! That I got for free! Because if I actually went to Miami and bought my parents two suitcases, they wouldn't like them. But, since I told them I got them for nothing (FREE! GRATIS!), they are excited to receive them. Actually, I told them I had one, but with my excellent packing and organizational skills I was able to pack one into our regular suitcase and use the other one as a carry on for us.

Let me explain this: the thrill of getting a good quality anything is a success to Cubans, namely my parents. It helps even more if the good quality anything was free (FREE! GRATIS! NO TAX!). The other thing is that both my mother and I feel that the gifts we bring eachother are the greatest, most ingenius gifts ever known to man. We never stop to think that the pajamas my mom brought me could easily have been bought in my neighborhood mall or that the shampoo gift basket that I brought her could have been bought in Miami. We've been doing this for years, including the time I regifted my father a Waterford crystal eagle that I received at some charity dinner (I carried that baby on the plane with me, folks!).

But I digress... what was I talking about? Yes, stress. I am sure it will continue through the weekend. I have already heard word of my father cooking for us and packing his home cooking up in containers for us to bring back to Jersey (we can't get food up here, apparently). And there's no arguing with him, so we'll be eating his specialty dish for a few days after we get back.

I suppose I should just enjoy the attention from the family. Afterall, I'm their baby. And Mike, well, he's the greatest gringo they've ever met. I can't wait for my aunt to hug him and kiss him all over.

More on our adventures next week. And photos of us sweating in the hot south Florida sun and doing the white man's overbite to the Electric Slide!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Tagged Again

I've been tagged by the lovely Freckle Face Girl. I was hoping I wouldn't get tagged with this particular one, but I can't deny FFG. Here goes:

Six Weird Things About Me

  1. I normally wake up in a good mood. By this, I mean that I am able to wake up and strike up a conversation. I rarely require coffee/caffeine to get me going. Anyone I have ever lived or vacationed with find this trait extremely annoying. I think my co-workers hate it too, since I am able to walk in to the office and immediately start chatting about anything and everything.
  2. I am a first class organizer. Just look at my post from yesterday. If the bed isn't made every morning, I cannot function at work. I just keep thinking about how awful the room looks with multiple sheets all tangled up. If Mike leaves after me, I practically have to bed him to make the bed. If it doesn't get made, I will come home and regardless of the time, make the bed. I arrange all my shirts on hangers and they all must face the same direction. I like to clean the fridge out every few days and rearrange the items.
  3. When watching television or listening to the radio, the slightest melodramatic music or voice will scare me. For as long as I can remember, I have not been able to watch Unsolved Mysteries. The host's voice really freaks me out. And I don't like the element of surprise in mysteries. Ironically, I love shows like Lost, Law and Order - SVU and CI, and Criminal Minds.
  4. I tape the Rachael Ray show every single day even though I am completely irritated by her. There is something about watching the show (sometimes on fast forward) and making fun of her butt and her terrible interviewing skills that brings joy to my day.
  5. I love shopping on online. I used to be skeptical about eBay, but now, I am a huge fan. I buy all kinds of things online: books, music, movies, soap, shampoo and conditioner, cotton balls. With the exception of clothes and shoes, I have probably bought it online.
  6. I am a coupon clipper. I love the thrill of using coupons every week at the grocery store and saving over $10. My obsession with coupons is so extreme, I have joined a coupon train group.

How's that for weird? There are many more weird things about me, but I thought these things revealed a lot about me and everyday personality.

I am tagging my bff on this one. She's even weirder than I am.

More Changes

Subtle, yes, but changes none-the-less. I've taken your comments (all four of them!) very seriously, as you can see. Like I said previously, I don't know the codes or html, so changes things dramatically is difficult. But I am trying.

Again, all comments are appreciated.

For now, I leave you with the result of an afternoon of organzing my linen closet:

I am not well, folks. Look at my hallway linen closet. Doesn't it make you want to vomit? Come on, I know you just threw up in your mouth a little. :)

More closet cleaniness. This time, the lower portion of the closet. Notice all the cleaning supplies at the bottom? They are located right next to Mike's numerous Ace bandages.

This Friday, I Got a Fever... and the only prescription is more cowbell

This week has been busy and full of stress. And that's only because of the weather. I shouldn't complain, as I know that other areas had far worse weather than we had in Jersey, but still, this was my reality for a week, and it seems like it will continue into the weekend.

Currently, my car is parked over a sheet of ice. It's not that we were lazy and didn't shovel it, it's that it was shoveled, then it rained ice over it and it's so compacted and frozen that it won't budge. Luckily, the car is a 4x4, so there is no sliding when I park it. The roads are relatively clean, but the rements of this snow/ice storm have started to look drappy. Very dirty and grey. And even though NJ isn't the most beautiful state, it now looks dreary and deathly.

Valentine's Day was good. I'm not really a Valentine's Day kind of gal - I prefer something simple to a huge bouquet of red roses delivered to my office. I think it stems from years of terrible Valentine's Day that were full of expectations and letdowns (I could go into the many stories, but I'm trying to be upbeat here - although... one year I made shrimp parmesan for a 'friend' - I slaved over it, cooked it perfectly, and then the 'friend' asked if we could go to the all you can eat buffet. ALL. YOU. CAN. EAT. BUFFET. I've never made shrimp parmesan since...).

Anyway, back to the upbeatness... VDay was good. No complaints. Just love. Cheesey love. That's me - a cheese whiz.

The weekend doesn't hold any exciting plans for me. Maybe a visit to the in-laws, some housecleaning, some shopping. Nothing strenuous or taxing.

Maybe I'll sleep in tomorrow. And Sunday too. *That* would be the life for me (See? The little things make me happy. The little things, people!).

And next week, I'll be looking forward to going to sunny Miami for a long weekend. Ahhh, sunshine....

For now, I leave you with this piece of funniness that never fails to crack me up...
